Just like Sirius Black did his 12 years of waiting in Azkaban, we, too, have done our waiting. Only it was a matter of two years, not 12. And the waiting was done in social media purgatory, not a prison full of dark wizards and witches. Nonetheless, we did our waiting and the time has finally come. Instagram users rejoice! The photo-sharing app has finally added new filters and features.

In December of 2012, the photo-sharing app added the Mayfair and Willow filters, but that was it. It has been approximately two years since an Instagram update included new filters, and it is about time that changed. The new filters were designed to go with the times of evolving photography needs and cell phone specifications. Instagram searched high and low for inspiration and found that inspiration in the fashion, photography, design, and art worlds.

In the update released on Tuesday, Instagram added five new filters: Slumber, Crema, Ludwig, Aden, and Perpetua. The Slumber filter adds a “haze” and “retro dreamy look.” While the Crema filter adds a “creamy” look to your photo, Ludwig is all about the “minimalist” approach, and Aden adds a “pastel” look. Perpetua lends a “blue/green” feeling to your photos.

The latest update from Instagram also included new features. Users of the photo-sharing app can now rearrange the order of filters via a "manage" button in the filter tray. Also, users will now see a blurred-out preview of their own image in the filter tray. This will replace the previous setup in which users would see how the various filters would look on a stock photo.

Instagram’s update also includes real-time commenting. Previously users would be required to refresh the app to see any new comments, but that is a thing of the past now.

The new filters seem exciting and I personally cannot wait to try them out. The real-time commenting also appears to be one of the best parts of the Instagram update, especially for businesses. This particular element could allow for businesses to have easier, more relevant interaction with followers. Thoughts? Are you excited for the just-in-time-for-Christmas update from the photo-sharing app?
