Instagram to Feature Video Ads

Instagram already has photo ads, but now they’re adding video ads as well. Instagram’s parent company, Facebook, debuted video ads on its site at the end of 2013, and now they’ve spread to Instagram.

The targeted ads will be 15-second-long videos from L’Oreal, CW, and Disney, with more companies advertising to come.

When Facebook began its video ads, there was a lot of backlash regarding the auto-play feature. Users didn’t like to be forced into watching videos, although Facebook did offer the ability to turn off the automatic play.

Mostly, people were confused on which was an ad and which was an Instagram video auto-playing in their Facebook Feed. Instagram has just come out with the video feature, and Facebook had just started setting the videos to automatically play, leaving a lot of users feeling duped into watching an ad because they believed it was a friend’s Instagram video.

That is likely to happen with the new video ads in Instagram. Users, used to seeing videos in their feeds from people they follow, will undoubtedly mistake an ad for a friend’s video post. Still, as with Facebook, there isn’t likely to be much backlash.
