For all of those who have left cable and satellite television behind, HBO’s announcement to sell its service online in 2015 is great news.

For years, many have complained about the high cost of cable, yet it’s hard to give up because of the quality shows airing on some cable channels. More and more people have migrated away from traditional television programming to Netflix, Hulu, and others. Still, we’ve missed some of those channels.

This week, HBO announced it would allow people to buy its service online, without a cable subscription. The chief executive said in the announcement, “It is time to remove all barriers to those who want HBO. So, in 2015, we will launch a stand-alone, over-the-top HBO service in the United States.”

HBO will still sell subscriptions through cable providers, but the new stand-alone service is a welcome change. The company is looking at this new venture as a way to position itself to get a larger audience. According to HBO, there are around 80 million homes that do not have HBO, and they want to go after them.

So far there has been no word from HBO as to how much the Internet-only version of the channel would cost.
