#FeelingNuts Goes Viral

One typically does not want to place any sort of body part near the word "viral." It could mean a serious illness or another one of those lovely celebrity photo leaks. However, this time the combination is a good thing. Check One Two, a testicular cancer awareness group, recently started a new online challenge.
The challenge urges participants to snap a clothed photo of themselves grabbing their nether regions. The photo, of course, is to be posted on social media. And then participants are called to challenge others, much like the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. The challenge has affectionately been dubbed #FeelingNuts. The group is not necessarily seeking monetary donations in this online challenge, unlike the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge however. The main goal behind #FeelingNuts is awareness and education. Check One Two wants others to better understand testicular cancer and how to check for it.
Any and all are called to participate. Even though the hashtag might seem appropriate only for the male gender, the group is asking for females to participate as well. The more the merrier when it comes to raising awareness. Also, female participants likely know someone who has been or could be affected by testicular cancer.
The #FeelingNuts challenge actually started earlier in the summer, towards the end of August. However, it only recently went viral. Hugh Jackman tweeted out a photo of himself, and a couple friends, checking the goods. Jackman went on to challenge Neil Patrick Harris, Ricky Gervais, and Michael Strahan. Other celebrities who have been challenged, or have participated, include: Will Arnett, William Shatner, Niall Horan, Jason Derulo, Ellie Goulding, and others. But it is believe that Jackman’s recent tweet will be what really sets the challenge on fire.
It will be interesting to see if #FeelingNuts catches on with the general, non-celebrity population. To be honest, it would be a bit strange to scroll through your news feed to see a distant relative or old friend from high school taking hold of down below. Because of the seemingly sensitive nature of the topic and challenge, do you believe it to be appropriate? Testicular cancer is a very real and terrible disease. It deserves attention and awareness. But do you think anyone will take it seriously? Or will humor be a great way to approach a sensitive subject for some people? I’m sure some people will take the photo simply to showcase themselves. But hopefully #FeelingNuts will do its job and meet the goals of the Check One Two group.
This new viral challenge brings to mind a few thoughts. But the main question is this: Are crazy online challenges the wave of the charitable future?
