Zero Is The Magic Number

For a society that wants everything we have an appetite bordering on hangry for an over abundance of absolutely nothing. We want zero calories, zero fat, zero emissions, zero tolerance, and even zero email. That'd be nice, right?
Well, this propensity of ours for all things zero is slowly but surely becoming the driving force for new and emerging technology.

Ever feel like one of those side show freaks performing superhuman feats to shocked viewers when you log-in to find 7,000 emails in your inbox all which must be read before a 10AM conference call? Yeah, me too.

Atos, an international IT services company, suggests they may be able to quell the freak show and have honed in on a zero email inbox. The company claims they have found a way out of the electronic ankle bracelet otherwise known as email and into social collaboration toting a super special social platform for employees. Instead of the plethora of urgent, ASAP, red flagged emails, employees will now communicate via posts and instant messaging. I, for one, would love this idea to grow legs, become heavily tattooed, swallow swords and really get some attention.

The car industry is in on the zero bandwagon too. Prius owners listen up, wanna trade in your hybrid for a recyclable car? That may be possible in the future. Ever hear of nanostructured carbon fibers? No? Welll, lemme 'splain it. So, there are these little tiny baby fibers, right? And they are carbon, I think. They mash 'em together real tight. OK, maybe it's better if you Wikihow it. What I do know is that vehicle manufacturers are taking these little nuggets of fiber and creating a light weight recyclable material to build cars potentially reducing the weight of them by at least 10 percent. Lighter cars means less fuel which means more Benjamins in your pocket. More importantly, we pour less toxic greenhouse gas emissions into our beautiful planet. It's a win-win for all.
American Honda Motor Co., Inc. has come out with a “net-zero” home, one capable of producing as much energy as it consumes. The Honda Smart Home, is a hi-tech sustainable zero-carbon home. In order to keep up with the Joneses on this one you’re gonna need your very own mechanical room that stores data on your home and then uploads it to a cloud server. The data includes all energy flows within the home, water flows, temperatures within the walls and floors, system checks and even the weather. 

Thanks to that magical number, zero, you can tell your autonomous, driverless, recyclable car to take you directly home with zero accidents to your net-zero energy efficient smart house for a nice zero carb dinner. I think Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros say it best, "Well, holy moly me oh my".
