Answer Your Phone, It's Your Mother

Hasn’t anyone ever told you not to ignore your mother? If she calls or sends a text message, then it is in your best interest to answer. If you do not answer, well, there will be hell to pay. Teenagers, specifically, have a history of ignoring their mothers’ telephone requests for location updates. Adolescent hubris tells us that she does not need to know. Or, maybe it is adolescent absentmindedness that causes us to forget — it is all those hormones. One mother had enough of being ignored and forgotten, so she came up with a solution in the form of an app.
Sharon Standifird, a mother from Houston, Texas, created and developed Ignore No More. Ignore No More is an app that allows parents, or guardians, to lock a child’s phone after repeatedly ignored phone calls or text messages. In order to unlock the phone the child is limited to two options. The options include calling the parent or guardian, or calling an emergency/first responder. Their options do not include texting a friend or calling a significant other — just getting in touch with those in charge. After talking with their child, parents and guardians can unlock the phone or leave it locked. The app is currently only available for Android devices; however, Standifird is working to design a version for Apple
The Ignore No More app can give parents and guardians a peace of mind. It forces the child to call his or her guardian and let them know he or she is okay. Ignore No More places even more digital control in the hands of parents and guardians.

Is that a good thing? The app reviews are mixed with regards to that question. Some people feel that parents have the right to install such an app if they are paying for the phone bill. After all, aren’t parents and guardians supposed to look out for the safety of their children? Others feel Ignore No More goes too far, taking away independence and trust. Some opponents of the app believe it should either not be installed or be used as a last-resort consequence.
Aside from trust issues, what about technical issues? Can Ignore No More interfere with the phone communication? Will the app still allow easy use for navigating emergency calls? Standifird says yes to all those questions. Ignore No More is said to work fairly seamlessly with the Android operating system. And parents will receive notification if the app is tampered with in any way, i.e. uninstalling, settings, and so forth.
Digital safety, or any safety, is crucial these days. The world can be a difficult place to navigate. And raising a child in that environment can be even scarier — it is a great responsibility. But does that mean we need to be going down the road of Ignore No More? Or is the app the perfect tool to help parents do their job? Would you download Ignore No More for your children? Or would you say no thanks to the app?
