Facebook's Release Snafu

Facebook slipped up and accidentally released its new photo-sharing app, Slingshot.

The new app, which was erroneously posted in the Apple App Store, is similar to the wildly popular Snapchat. Users can share videos and photos, insert text on the pictures, and set expirations dates for the messages to be deleted.

Following the snafu, Facebook released the statement, “Earlier today, we accidentally released a version of Slingshot, a new app we’re working on.” The social media giant made no mention of when the official release date would be. Slingshot has since been removed from the App Store.

Facebook has been actively pursuing photo-sharing, even reportedly offering $3 billion to buy Snapchat. Snapchat turned the offer down. In 2012, Facebook bought Instagram for $1 billion. Facebook also previously had its own photo-sharing app, Poke, but has discontinued it after it basically flopped with users.

Snapchat’s popularity will make it hard for Slingshot to make a dent in the market. Still, Snapchat has been riddled with criticism recently over its failure to protect users’ privacy and lack of adherence to its own privacy policies, so much so that the federal government has gotten involved in ensuring that Snapchat abides by its own policies.
