Skype Adds A New Wrinkle for Media Training

There was a time when, if a Washington DC TV station wanted to interview someone in New York, that person had to go to a sister station and do a satellite interview. Very fancy companies might have had a Polycom video conference solution, and maybe, just maybe, the techies at the company could get on the phone with the techies at the station to work something out. Today, there’s the Skype Interview, and it is adding a whole new wrinkle to media training.

Those of us who have media trained our clients will recognize some of the following:
  • Go easy on the hand motions
  • Don’t bob your head like Cindy Crawford, it is distracting
  • Smile
However, the Skype interview adds a new element: the ability to overcorrect in real-time, because participants see themselves in real-time.

Nervous habits that trained spokespeople have not only show up, but somehow seem magnified.

So, if you’re the sort who trains people on giving interviews, it’s time to add a new wrinkle to your arsenal.

Or, it’s time to grab a Post-It note and cover up the self-facing picture-in-picture window.
