Foursquare to Split Into Two Apps

Foursquare is now becoming two Twosquares? Not exactly, but the app’s CEO did announce that the popular app will be splitting in two.

The Foursquare we all know will still be around, but there will also be a new app, Swarm. The focus of the new app is to keep users in touch with their friends, and still have the same check-in feature as Foursquare. In addition, the Foursquare app itself will receive a facelift.

The news of Foursquare’s split came as a shock to many. Dennis Crowley, Foursquare’s CEO, admitted the split seems crazy, but that it’s the right thing to do. He says the split will allow the company to focus in on single functions in each app, thereby making them better because of the simplicity.

According to Crowley, Foursquare will be focusing on creating better personalization for the app’s users. Instead of everyone getting the same, bulk responses for a search of restaurants, Foursquare seeks to deliver results that are more tailored to individual’s tastes. The results would be based on personal likes, as well as recommendations from user’s friends.

The new Swarm app will launch next week, and the new Foursquare will debut in the summer.
