Google Glass: Symbol of Tension

Is Google Glass starting class warfare? A recent attack on a reporter for Business Insider suggests that Google Glass may be a sign of increasing tensions between the gadget-haves and the gadget-have-nots.

Kyle Russell recently told CNN of the March attack. Russell was wearing his Google Glass when someone snatched it off his face, and ran. He chased after the person, who ultimately smashed his Glass on the ground and ran away.

The attack comes as more and more disgruntled feelings toward Google and its employees rise in San Francisco. Before the attack, Russell had been covering a protest organized against a Google employee. He believes the person who smashed his Google Glass was also likely at the protest.

Several protests against Google employees have occurred in recent months. Many people in San Francisco blame Google and other tech giants for negatively impacting the city, particularly when it comes to driving up the cost of rent in the city.

Google released the following statement about the attack:

"Targeting anyone for a crime because of what they wear is wrong. We have reached out to the person to see what we can do to help.”

Considering Google Glass’s hefty price tag of $1,500, the offer to help is probably appreciated.
