Your Emojis Are About to Get More Diverse

Sometimes you just can’t find an emoji that accurately reflects who you are. There are a limited number of faces and people emojis, and let’s face it; the majority of them are pretty vanilla. Thankfully, Apply has heard our frustration, and has promised to create a more ethnically diverse set of emoji choices.

According to a statement by Apple, “Our emoji characters are based on the Unicode standard, which is necessary for them to be displayed properly across many platforms. There needs to be more diversity in the emoji character set, and we have been working closely with the Unicode Consortium in an effort to update the standard.”

In other words, we’re going to see a much broader ethnic landscape in our emoji keyboards soon. The diversification comes after thousands — including some celebrities — took to the Internet to petition Apple to create more emojis. The company, like many others, is feeling pressure from shifting social attitudes about diversity.

The current emoji keyboard apparently already includes two homosexual couples, as well as a straight couple, and a family.

There is no official release date yet, and Apple has not commented on what the new emojis will be, but it should come sometime in the near future.
