Apparently we were wrong to be worried about the fate of Instagram when Facebook bought it in 2012. The photo-sharing company has seen an increase of 35% in 2013, and continues to grow across many user demographics.

According to eMarketer, Instagram has gained so much popularity in the last year that it now rivals Twitter amongst regular usage numbers on smartphones. The eMarketer numbers find that nearly 35 million people a month use Instagram at least once a month. That’s just a little ahead of Twitter, who had 30.8 million users a month in 2013.

What’s particularly interesting about the eMarketer numbers is that it shows Instagram has regular usage amongst the young and old. While Twitter’s audience is fairly average across the board, 69% of Instagram users are 18–44. Instagrammers have also become more even in gender numbers, moving away from two-thirds female users to 55% female and 45% male ratio.

The success of Instagram has to be encouraging to WhatsApp and Oculus VR, both companies recently purchased by the social media giant. For the time being, both companies are still operating on their own, similar to how Instagram has maintained its own brand while under its parent company.
