Some people just don’t fit into traditional gender categories. Now — at least on Facebook — they don’t have to. This week, Facebook unveiled new custom gender selections for user profiles.
Previously, Facebook limited gender choices to male and female. Meaning it was either “he/his” and “she/her.” Now, users can select the gender-neutral they/their. According to Facebook:
Facebook teamed up with LGBT organizations to create a list of gender options, including transgender identifications. Users can customize their gender settings by selecting one of the choices offered in the About section of their profile.
“We see this as one more way we can make Facebook a place where people can express their authentic identity.”
Facebook also added a level of control about who gender information could be shared with. As part of their announcement, Facebook stated:

“We also have added the ability for people to control the audience with whom they want to share their custom gender. We recognize that some people face challenges sharing their true gender identity with others, and this setting gives people the ability to express themselves in an authentic way.”
