Ever wonder which pharmaceutical company is the highest ranking social media engager? Probably not, but social media in healthcare is growing, albeit slowly. And Johnson & Johnson is #1.

According to a new study, Johnson & Johnson outranks its competitors by a lot. For many pharmaceutical companies there has been significant hesitation to use and engage consumers on social media. Cumbersome privacy regulations, hefty penalties, and little regulatory guidance related to social media interactions have left many wary. The FDA did release a draft of social media guidelines in the beginning of January 2014, but healthcare providers and other companies within the healthcare industry still seem to prefer to err on the side of caution.

Still, social media is a necessity for businesses to reach and interact with their consumers. In fact, the ability to interact with companies and providers via social media has been at the top of customers’ wish lists for quite awhile.

Other stats according to the social media study:

Facebook is the fourth most popular source of health information in the United Kingdom.

Physicians spend three hours/week (average) watching videos for professional purposes.

Wikipedia “is the leading single source of healthcare information for patients and healthcare professionals.”
