Rethink Your Selfies

The Internet sure is hating on selfies right now. In the last couple of months, there have been more articles, posts, and parodies of the stereotypical self photograph. How did the selfie become so hated?

Personally, selfies don’t bother me as much as they seem to bother other people. That said, there is a special place of loathing in my heart when it comes to the bathroom mirror selfie. Out of all the selfie styles, the bathroom one is hands down the worst. It reeks of loneliness.

You couldn’t find one friend to take your picture?

A bathroom selfie as your profile picture — from LinkedIn to OKCupid — just isn’t ok. Put on a shirt, clean your mirror, and still take the picture somewhere else. The bathroom is a private place for a reason. Just like no one needs to see what else you do in there, no one needs to see that picture.

As for every other kind of selfie, it’s probably best to err on the side of caution. If the photo you just took looks like it could easily be a still from the TV show COPS, then you may want to rethink posting it online.

After all, do you really want your grandkids to look back at pictures of you sticking out your tongue and flipping off the camera?
