Bringing Virtual Reality and Reality Together: Anki Cars

When I was a kid I had a racecar track. My brother and I would create different tracks and race our two little cars around and around until someone won or one of our cars ran off the track. It was awesome! I can still remember those days, just playing for hours on end and never getting tired of it.
Then came the invention of video games and we progressed to the Atari and Sega Genesis…we know how the story goes. It’s almost two decades since I've played with a live racecar track or even touched a Hot Wheels car. Yet, there are still some ‘80s geeks in the world who remember the nostalgia of racing on an electric track with a little car, and those geeks are partners in bringing the race car experience back to your living room floor.

Apple and Anki Cars have partnered to bring old-school electric racecar racing to a new generation with a twist. Instead of having a handheld remote control, racers can download the “Anki Drive App” and use their iPhones, iPads, or iPods to control their cars as they fight to the death to destroy their opponents.
The cars are super awesome. You have four to pick from: Boson (The Fast Attacker), Koauri (The Agile Striker), Rho (The High Speed Fortress), and Katal (The Aggressive Defender). Yes, with those names you are in for the fight of your life when you hit the track. The action is intense because you are playing in two worlds at once. The cars are moving on your iPhone and on the track at the same time. You are ramming people on your screen and on the track. You are blowing up your enemies with missiles and suddenly you see their car go out of commission on the track. It’s really fun to watch, but more importantly it is really fun to play; anyone can test drive the cars at Apple stores across the country.

Priced at $199.00 for a starter kit and exclusively for play for Apple owners only, it is truly a beautiful merger of old and new technology that is exciting generations today. Just when we thought that the video game world had done away with play in reality, Apple and Anki Cars helped us remember that remote control cars will always be cool.
