Move Over, Vine: Instagram Now Has Videos

Forget moving over. Vine may as well pack up its stuff and go home. Instagram is crushing Vine, with nearly a 40 percent drop in tweets containing Vine videos on the day Instagram’s video feature launched.

But why has it been such a virtual stomping?

Perhaps it’s the length. Vine videos are limited to a mere six seconds, while Instagram videos can be up to 15 seconds. That’s nine more seconds of awesomeness (or trivial nonsense) to be captured for posterity.

Was it the initial iPhone-only launch? Android phones have only been able to get in on the Vine action within the last two weeks.

Probably the biggest advantage has been Instagram’s backing from Facebook. Vine has Twitter as its parent company, but Facebook outsizes Twitter by millions. Adding to that: Facebook is blocking users’ ability to search for their Facebook friends on Vine.

Note: you can darn sure search for your Facebook friends on Instagram.

Instagram videos are likely to continue to outpace Vine by leaps and bounds. The reality is that there are just so many more Facebook and Instagram users already. Not to mention many of us are already using Instagram to share photos.

Why would we want to use three separate applications when we can only use the two? The answer is: we wouldn’t.
