Game of Thrones Fans In Tune With Social Media

HBO’s Game of Thrones series is one of the most talked-about cable network shows on Facebook this season. At the end of March when the third season premiered, it became one of the most-pirated shows on the web this year. Now, there are only two more episodes left before the show wraps up the season and this week HBO is taking a hiatus for the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

Since the show began back in the spring of 2011 it has quickly gained a large, enthusiastic following, so I thought it would be interesting to take a look at how HBO has been engaging the with the show’s fans on social media this season. Last week, the Game of Thrones Facebook page celebrated passing the six-million-fans mark. The show’s Facebook content is all about keeping the posts visual, short, and to the point. The show’s most successful content has often been images from the show paired with memorable one-liners from the clever and witty dialogue between lead characters. Almost every week the show is promoting new exclusive badges that fans can unlock on GetGlue. HBO has even incorporated a select few of wildly popular fan memes into its social strategy and created limited-edition stickers for fans to unlock on GetGlue. HBO knows that Game of Thrones fans love to discuss the show, so questions are a daily part of the show’s content mix as well and it typically gets a response from at least 15% of its audience.

The show is also active on other usual social media sites like Twitter, where it has seen a 40% increase in followers in the past three months, and YouTube. This season an official Game of Thrones presence on Instagram and Pinterest was created. The show’s Instagram photos showcase creative stills of toy versions of the show’s main characters in various plot-related locations. The Pinterest page for Game of Thrones has nine boards that range in themes from Westerosi recipes and fan artwork inspired by the show, which was originally submitted via the show's Tumblr blog. All in all, HBO has found numerous ways to engage with its diverse Game of Thrones audience online.
