Use Your Talents: Be an Awesome Creative

Last night I was teaching my Thursday night class and for the opening I used a sermon I saw last week by minster T.D. Jakes, a world renowned-speaker and teacher of God’s word, to introduce my students to their very own greatness. The gifts that God has given them are the most unique gifts in the world and it makes them as special as anyone else God has made in this world.

In a world where creative professionals struggle in varying industries to make their mark or etch their work into the remembrance of history, it is sometimes so painful to watch someone explode onto the field with greatness while your work gets passed over for this unstoppable superhero that you wish you could just drown in kryptonite. However, this person is merely utilizing their talents to the best of their ability. This person is simply being excellent on their level. You can’t be a creative director before it is your time. You can’t be a professional designer before it’s your time. Like the saying goes, “Everyone has a season and everything happens for a reason.” Maybe it’s not your time yet; maybe you’re a few assignments from hitting your first home run. Maybe you need to practice some more. Yet, whatever it is, you have the capability to be great on your level: Junior, Mid, Senior, Director, or Executive. We know each organization can have a kazillion titles. Yet what is a title if you’re not excellent at your job? What’s a title if you’re not giving your best? A fancy name doesn’t make you great! God made you great the moment he laid eyes on you. As the psalmist David once said, “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made.”

Just think about it. Don’t all art directors like art? Don’t writers like to write? So what makes Leo Burnett different from a David Ogilvy? They were made to express their art form in the business world to help their clients grow their brands…equally brilliant and as different as night and day. Wonderfully made! There’s a great poem written by Edgar A. Guest that the minister used during his sermon that I think everyone should file in the creative notes and share with others. It goes like this: “Figure it out for yourself lad. You have all the greatest of men have had. Two arms. Two hands. Two legs. Two eyes. And a brain to use if you would be wise. With this equipment they all began. So start for the top and say I can. You have all the greatest of men have had.” Simply put, every great creative had to start somewhere. And all of them started the same. So be great no matter where you are. Then you’ll truly be great.
