Thrifty shoppers and extreme couponers may rejoice at Target’s news that up to 1,000 exclusive digital coupons will be available for use at its stores courtesy of a new partnership with Facebook. Target has enlisted help from Facebook to draw more customers into its brick-and-mortar stores with a new Facebook savings program for in-store items. Cartwheel is the title of the new promotion that has been in the works for at least a year and was finally released in beta yesterday.

Facebook users can redeem the coupons of their choice from a selection of 700 new deals available using Cartwheel this week, but the company expects to eventually increase the offering to 1,000 coupons. The deals will also be different than the sales listed in local weekly circulars and will offer up to 40% savings on specific items. Cartwheel is of course designed with sharing in mind, just as any other Facebook application, so with Cartwheel Target is hoping users will share the savings they discover and redeem with their friends. Coupons redeemed using Cartwheel are automatically shared with a user’s friends once a barcode for the savings is registered unless the sharing settings are changed after joining the savings program. Target has created numerous collections of savings, which essentially are categories featuring an assortment of items related to a specific theme. A number of Target’s collections are seasonal categories such the Mother’s Day, Grad Party Picks, and Patio Season collections.

Target plans to support the Cartwheel program with Facebook ads and earned media. Additionally, a Cartwheel mobile application is in the works with an anticipated release date of this summer for both the Android and iOS platforms. It’s a clever digital move for Target in an attempt to bring the digitally savvy consumers some companies are losing to discounted ecommerce-only retailers back to its brick-and-mortar stores. Only time will tell whether or not this was hit or miss for the retail giant.
