The popularity of visually focused online communities has made it much harder to track down the origin of items pictured in images uploaded to thousands of user-generated content sites. Whether you are scrolling through photos on Instagram or sifting through posts on Tumblr, at some point you’ve grown admire an item in a photo that you can’t quite figure out where to look to purchase one of your own. You can now take your search to The Hunt, an open community devoted to helping members track down any desired item pictured in an image.

Members of The Hunt can create new hunts, follow another member’s hunt, or help other members solve their hunt by adding a link to the purchase location of the item or a similar item. Those members who elect to create a new hunt can add details such as product descriptions, budget, and item category, which are extremely helpful in cases where there are several items in one image. One unique descriptive detail that can be added is the type of hunt category. The hunt type category opens the site up to be much more than a user-generated matching service; it instead turns some hunts into community-style consultations with the “this look for less,” “similar to this,” and “what goes with this” hunt type options. Site users are hunting for everything from antique style furniture pieces to casual platform wedge sandals. Although the majority of the items on the site are women’s fashion pieces, the company is looking to expand its reach into other product categories like beauty, men’s fashion, and home décor.

The Hunt received a significant amount of additional funding from a host of high-profile investors with connections to the entertainment industry, including Ashton Kutcher. The young company is eager to improve its user experience and release an iPhone application soon. The site has seen a steady increase in new members with about 50,000 new sign-ups each week. The Hunt launched publicly this past January, so I’m sure we’ll see the site grow in more than a few ways, especially with the company’s new investors on board.
