New Patents Show Apple's Now on the Defensive When it Comes to Innovation

Apple has filed some new patents, and gee golly am I excited. The first patent is for a new MacBook design with a removable touchscreen, and the other patent is for street view navigation that actually goes into buildings. Holy wow! Those Apple geniuses are at it again! I mean, who else could possibly even conceive of such innovat—...

...wait a minute.

Laptop with removable touchscreen...sounds a whole lot like Microsoft's Surface tablet, which has been out on the market for some time now. And indoor navigation? Already very much in the works

"But it's APPLE!" enthusiasts will undoubtedly say. "Apple makes everything COOLER."

Sadly, I must point out there was a time when the same enthusiasts would not protest by saying Apple makes everything "cooler." They'd protest by saying "Apple makes everything cool." As in, Apple made it first.

Not the case anymore, it seems. Perhaps The Woz is right when he says Apple is indeed losing its "cool."

Clearly, Apple is now on the defensive when it comes to bringing cool innovations to market. And that's definitely NOT where I'd want to be, especially in a market where it seems people are growing tired of paying top-dollar for your products. If I'm going to fork over twice as much cash, it darn well better be something nobody else makes, or at the very least, something nobody else makes just as well if not better.

But I'm still holding out for it — that mind-blowing innovation that's going to change the way we do everything. I'm just not so confident anymore that it's going to come from Apple.
