Don’t Educate Her: The Marketing of Inhumanity

Withholding education from select groups has been a way to deprive people of privilege for thousands of years. Powerful and educated men have wielded their knowledge as a weapon to dominate entire civilizations and violate humanity in unforgivable ways. Women have suffered at the brunt of this ideal for as long as it has existed. However troubling this might seem, some people in the world find the mistreatment of ladies to be culturally acceptable; a social norm easily justified by years of application and tribal acceptance. In 2013 we witnessed the depths to which some would fight to keep certain classes of people uneducated with the shooting of Malala Yousafzai, a 15-year-old Pakistani school girl who was shot by the Taliban for reading and supposedly promoting Westernized thinking. 

Is this really 2013, when governments with the capability to educate millions are co-marketing the "do-not-educate" cause? Tyrants are issuing bans on girls’ educations. What does this say about the world we live in? What does it say about the United Nations? Are we truly united in one mindset? The abuse of women in Pakistan is so widespread that women have had acid thrown in their faces by husbands or men close to them for defying them. Better known as “Acid Attacks,” these also happen frequently in the Afghanistan community. The Oscar-winning documentary “Saving Face” shares the stories of two women who were attacked viciously by their loved ones. 

In Afghanistan, Najia Sidiqi, head of the women's affairs department in the eastern province of Laghman, was killed on her way to work by the Taliban. 120 Afghan school girls were poisoned by an airborne contaminant. Shortly thereafter, 150 Afghan school girls were poisoned through their drinking water along with three teachers in an effort to destroy their chances at getting an education. Is depriving women of education a worthy cause that is promoted to men by men in the world? This inhumanity is nothing more than a calculated campaign to keep women in certain parts of the world under the heel of male dominance. 
Who holds meeting to discuss scare tactics to terrorize little girls and women? What type of human beings prey on their mothers, sisters, daughters, and wives? Is the word “education” so horrific? Does it have demonic connotations that defy religious norms? The reality is that “education” is a means to empowerment. It’s a means to a better life. It’s a key to the door of equality that evens the playing field for economic and social opportunities. More importantly, it gives one the means to be a force for good against those who dare to deprive people of their humanity.
