New Digital Content Curation Game Changer: Flipboard 2.0

Flipboard users gained access to the second edition of the popular social magazine application on Tuesday. The application has taken its mantra of being “the world’s first social magazine” a step further by allowing users to actually curate content for customized magazines. 

By simply selecting the new “+” feature, Flipboard users can add any piece of content in their stream, including articles, images, videos, and even audio, to tell any story they choose. All the items complied into users' custom magazines feature a proper credit given to the original source of the content. Users can even choose to select content from various social media streams on Twitter or Facebook from within the application for their magazine. A cover spread for a magazine can be selected from any of the content used within a particular magazine. Any magazine created can be set as either public or private at any time by making one effortless edit. Flipboard users can share their new public magazines with others via email, Facebook, or Twitter. Users can build a community around the content they curate on Flipboard with the ability to like, comment, or subscribe to their magazines, and the new Flipboard Notifications feature informs users of any new community interaction with their content.   

An additional Flipboard feature released under the application’s 2.0 edition is “Flip It,” a bookmarklet feature, which is very similar to “Pin It” for Pinterest or “Share on Tumblr” for Tumblr. Two additional must-have capabilities when making a move to the content curation world these days are Flipboard’s new Content Search and Content Guide features. Flipboard’s Content Search allows readers to discover content intentionally through keyword searches for specific topics, users, and hashtags, while the Content Guide showcases magazines by both ordinary users and brands/publishers.  

Flipboard partnered with Etsy for the 2.0 launch and pulled the independent creative e-commerce site’s blog and products into a magazine. The Esty spread includes a custom purchase button built into the Flipboard application. This especially could potentially be huge opportunity for other players in the e-commerce world.  

Unfortunately, Android users aren’t able to get in on the magazine creating action just yet, since the update was only released for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch devices, but all users can view magazines at this time. The company is hoping to make Flipboard 2.0 available to Android users very soon.      

Flipboard became available in 2010 and since then the application has consistently risen in popularity, often being praised for its beautiful, sleek, and easy-to-use interface. It’s also a great alternative to Google Reader, as Flipboard can copy all the RSS feeds you follow with Google before the technology giant officially shutters the product on July 1, 2013.
