Easter: A Sweet Opportunity for Advertising!

As I spoke with my mother last week about the lingering Minnesota winter she was (unfortunately) still experiencing, she reminded me that Easter was quickly approaching. She told me that she’d forgotten to decorate, so she scrambled to put up her decorations just a short week before the holiday. I thought about that for a moment: My mother lives with my stepfather and her two adorable little flat-faced dogs. And while the dogs are certainly playful like children, I doubt they get the same thrill of hunting down Easter eggs like my sister and I did when we were little.

The modern version of Easter is undoubtedly inspired by the whimsy of youth. Children decorate eggs with their families, and the adults in turn enjoy watching the kids’ faces light up at the sight of sweet treats and shiny baubles. Religious services are an integral part of the celebration for some people, and for others, it’s simply a holiday to appreciate family and friends.

So naturally, there’s some value in this for brands looking to capitalize on these feelings of happiness and youthfulness. The candy companies roll out special Easter-themed treats, Cadbury Eggs come back for just a short period of time, and restaurants offer family-friendly dinner specials. But even if your company doesn’t cater to those under the age of 12, there are still many opportunities to take advantage of for an increase in sales.

For example, if you work for a travel company, you probably know that Easter weekend is a big travel date. Setting up vacation specials or travel deals for the holiday is a wise plan. Remember that not only do people travel to see their families, but some couples or families choose a more exotic vacation destination.

Or, if you work with online stores, try drawing in customers around Easter. But then, the weekend of the holiday, why not try offering free shipping, an extra 15% off, or coupons to use at a later date? This is not only a great way to bolster sales, but it’s also a way to show customers that you value their repeated business.

In terms of social media, hosting a caption contest or offering fans the opportunity to create an image that advertises your Easter specials is a great way to get people talking about your brand. With the clever usage of hashtags and sharing content with the right groups, you gain free advertising and valuable insight from the people that use your products.

After you’ve seen your sales rise and customers happily take part in your brand’s success, sit back and enjoy a piece of candy…or two. After all, it is Easter, and there’s nothing wrong with acting like a kid every once in a while!
