Would You Go to College to Major in Social Media?

I have a bachelor's degree in Psychology, for which I was often teased. It's a pointless major, people would say. Like Philosophy. Or English. Well, in the end, it wasn't so pointless, because it now helps inform my work in the social media world. But here's another degree that's bound to get similar ridicule.

A degree in social media. Hmmm. I'll admit, it sounds stupid — not because it is stupid, but because it's tainted by stigma (the headline of the article linked above makes that pretty clear). People think social media is all about mundane status updates and pointless chatter that diverts and distracts from real, meaningful work. On one hand, I guess they'd be right.

On the other hand, social media is about discovering what makes people tick. It's about figuring out what will compel people to like, to follow, to maintain loyalty — to buy. And if you can figure that out, you could make somebody — even yourself — a lot of money someday.

Which is why I don't so much mind this social media major that will be offered at South Carolina's Newberry College in August of 2013. The major uses social media as a heading for a blend of various skills: graphic design (for creating shareable, provocative JPEGs?), communications (good grammar and compelling messaging goes a long way), business and marketing (how does social media help us sell stuff?), psychology (how do we figure people out?) and statistics (backing up social media strategy with solid analytics and metrics, no doubt).

What do you think? Is the social media major a no-brainer? Or is social media better suited as an academic ingredient to be mixed into some other major, such as marketing or communications?
