The Great iPhone/Lumia 920 Experiment

We love our smartphones. We love them so much that it’s nearly impossible to switch from one operating system to another. iPhone users are traditionally the most stubborn of the bunch. Once they’re hooked into the iOS ecosystem, Android or Windows don’t stand a chance. This is why Mashable’s Senior Tech Analyst and iPhone fanatic Christina Warren’s iPhone/Lumia 920 experiment caught my eye. Christina bravely embarked on a ten-day journey in that would lock up her precious iPhone 5 in favor of the Lumia 920 running Windows Phone 8. The question at hand: Can she be swayed?

I should preface this endeavor with the recognition that the Lumia 920 is quite an impressive phone. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has gone on record stating they are going all in with these new product launches, and this handset certainly shows it. With an 8.7 megapixel camera (The iPhone has 8), resizable icons and a steal at $99.99, Microsoft may have a winner on their hands. They’ve even managed to follow in the footsteps of Apple and snagged celebrity endorsers Jessica Alba and Gwen Stefani. But will any of this matter to Christina’s “Living with Lumia” campaign when she knows her beloved iPhone is lurking in the distance?

Thankfully, Christina has been kind enough to document her journey. Only three days in, the brave iPhone user hosted a Googe+ Hangout this past Thursday to answer any questions we might have. Many discussions centered around the encountered pros and cons, as well as apps that could help her along the way. Sure, Apple’s marketplace of over 750,000 options squashes Windows 120,000, but major players like Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare, Spotify, Dropbox, Amazon and Yelp all have signed on. If Christina is convinced she can be converted to a Lumia 920 user, she will be happy to know that this number is growing every day (although she expressed frustration with no access to Instagram).

So the question remains: Can the most devoted of iPhone users flock to a new device when forced to spend ten days with a worthy rival? It goes without saying that Christina will have a fascinating insight into that very question. If you wish to follow Christina through her “Living with Lumia” experience, you can follow her on Twitter as she keeps he followers up to date. We thank you, Christina, for doing what most of us iPhone users can’t bring ourselves to do: give it up for an astonishing ten days.
