3 Simple Ways to 'Become the Trend' Online

Seth Godin published an interesting blog post Dec. 20 about "the new lazy journalism," in which he asserts that we need journalists to say something new, beyond what's popular or trending.

Now that the race to be first routinely comes down to seconds instead of days, it's no longer feasible for journalists to herd around trends, simply rehashing and re-tweeting each other's work.

Instead, they must create the trends by focusing attention where it hasn't yet been focused.
But...doesn't social media make it possible for anyone to create the trend?
Not everyone has the training — or the chops — to be a journalist. BUT, to increase your chances at creating the trends, you can:
Be unique. Put your own personal spin on the stuff you share via your social channels. Show people who you are, with photos, with snark, whatever it is that makes you who you are.
Be consistent. You don't have to share stuff every minute, or even every day. Just make sure the people who follow you know what to expect, and when.
Be appreciative. Play up and share the content that speaks to you. The more attention you give others, the more attention that comes back to you.
