It's Internet Week, B*tches

Directly following last week’s Fleet Week in NYC, this week the World Wide Web takes over the city with Internet Week.

As expected, this week will be filled with geeks and Internet smarties talking amongst themselves as well as on stage in order for the common folk to soak up all their MB’s of knowledge. These industry experts, the new rock stars, will discuss the latest and greatest with today’s Apple/Twitter announcement likely a hot topic.

Politicians are getting in on #IWNY also — even though Senator Chuck Schumer confirms that he is definitely not any kind of expert by stating “I don’t tweet that much myself, I’m just too busy.” He then follows that up with “I have a staff guy that follows me around and I tell him want to say and he does it.” Actually, on second thought, that sounds pretty luxurious. Having a staff member constantly ready to tweet your every whim? Not bad.

In addition to the rock-star experts and guest stars, many start-ups are taking this opportunity to showcase their wares. And it pays. Last year, Groupon sponsored the “Webutante Ball.” Now Groupon is…well, Groupon. Coincidence? Probably. This year the start-up Solvate is trying to snatch up some of that success dust. What is the Webutante Ball, you ask? It is, in essence, a sexy nerd prom. Held at Marquee in Chelsea, the event gathers the web elite and by the end of the night an Internet King & Queen are crowned.

There are many great events to check out if you are in town. However, if you are not in Gotham this week, you can keep up with the shenanigans by following the official hashtag, #IWNY and checking out the live-stream at www.iwny.co. As with anything, all good things have to come to an end, and Internet Week is no different. The week concludes on June 13. But don’t worry, Internet Week will live on all year, in practically every aspect of our lives. As with Mother’s Day, shouldn’t every week be Internet Week?
