Nuclear Crisis: What the Japanese Are Dealing With

In its nuclear plant emergencies, Japan seems to be using a centralized approach to crisis communication (from Tokyo), rather than a joint information center closer to the plants as would be the case in a U.S. nuclear emergency. Yet conditions after a severe earthquake and tsunami might not have allowed a "closer-in" approach in any event. Here's as complete an explanation of what's likely occurring at the stricken plants as we have seen. (Yet the photo accompanying the text seems to be of a burning chemical complex, not a nuclear site.)
