Good crisis communication is an imperative that, nonetheless, may not get much attention until a crisis arises, and then it will be too late  to communicate effectively. Crisis communication is like good musicianship—it needs to be in your hands beforehand. A comprehensive crisis communication plan should be at the ready. As it happens, here's one...

"Best Practices for Risk and Crisis Communication" is a 49-slide presentation from the The National Center for Food Protection and Defense in St. Paul, Minnesota, in partnership with the Risk+Crisis Communication Project of North Dakota State University and the Great Plains Institute fort Food Safety. What a great resource the Web can be when material like this is available! The slides provide step-by-step guidance on preparing to respond well should a crisis erupt in your own business or community setting. They can be downloaded or printed out for a Docstoc membership fee.

If you're vulnerable to corporate or municipal adversity from unexpected sources, take the time to live with these slides for a while, and return regularly to what you've learned. You'll be much better prepared to respond to your credit – the aim of good crisis communication.
