Sticking With Priorities—Not Easy But Key

Focus is a key concept in an era when distractions are multiplying at the speed of e-mail. Especially if you're a solo PR practitioner, deciding how to spend your time, every minute of it, and sticking with your priorities is key. So we share a post from Adam Singer on The Future Buzz blog—"The Critical Few." Like the critical few metrics, or the critical few platforms.

On platforms, we're torn. Adam notes that "Seth Godin doesn’t spend time on Twitter or Facebook. He actually doesn’t spend much time creating content with frequency anywhere other than his own blog and is focused 100% on opt-in at the source."

Well, we spend time on both Twitter and Facebook. For Twitter, the reason is that we've built a community of very helpful people in PR and communication who continually provide us with useful, skill-extending links. And Facebook, too, we feel, is a way of keeping in touch with valued colleagues, so long as we don't overdo it.

But, you know, with the other blogs we do for clients (three in all), our own blog has been languishing, and we regret that. Maybe we should concentrate on building up Beetles Beat and just give Twitter and Facebook glances. But are mere "glances" really possible?

Maybe not. That's what Adam Singer seems to be warning about as he writes about "the critical few" being key to focus, real effectiveness and on-line identity building.
