Yes, Wisk. In what I consider to be a fantastic use of brand identity, Wisk Laundry Detergent has just launched the WISK-IT™ application, which will help you wash your "online dirty laundry" away. Not only is the new app a great social media tool, but the correlation between laundry detergent and cleaning up your image on Facebook is also a break-through "A-Ha" that is probably creating quite a bit of jealousy among competitors. Additionally, Wisk proves that social media, when approached using strategically creative insight, can be used by any company, brand, or product. What is Wisk's magical idea?

The WISK-IT application allows users to search tagged, untagged and de-tagged photos of themselves in their friends' Facebook albums and provides a direct and efficient way to request their exclusion from those albums. "As an expert in stain fighting, we have created the WISK-IT application to help people clean up stains on their digital reputations," said Elisa Gurevich, WISK Brand Manager.

It's an extremely useful application that will help professionals and students. We all know that posting lewd pictures or references to taking bong hits may sink your career before you even get started. In fact, just this week, the CEO of Joie de Vivre, a company that operates a collection of boutique hotels in California, had to deal with pictures he posted on Facebook that, while not lewd in any way, show him wrapped in a tutu and a sarong. He struggles with two opposing forces: professional and personal presentation.

Prior to Facebook and similar sites, the two were kept apart easily. Now, our work friends and our friends from high school can post pictures of our wild years on Facebook that we may not really find appropriate for the professional image we've worked so hard to create. I have a classic picture of an old female friend of mine urinating by the side of the road, a bottle of vodka in hand. While none of her "no-no" spots are exposed, the picture is damning, especially now that she is a mother of four and quite established in a Fortune 500 corporation. From keeping Spring break pics from Mom and Dad to hiding those photos of that drunken sales trip in Seattle, the applications will request that your contacts remove your dirt. 

How WISK-IT Works:

  • Once installed, the user is offered a removal request to send to the photo's owner, such as: "Are you serious? Please wash this one away!" "Where did you find that photo???" and "This photo has got to go!"
  • Want to get more personal? Users are also provided with the option to personalize the removal request allowing them the forum to plead their case on why this photo should never have seen the light of day.
  • Once the owner receives the removal message, he or she is prompted to install the WISK-IT application and "wash away" the compromising photo. Users are also offered the opportunity to search their friends' photo albums that may include problematic snapshots.
  • All Facebook users can invite their friends to "clean up" their own Facebook image with WISK-IT.

Now, what happens on Facebook "never happened" on Facebook.
