I used to look on my faithful followers and think that it was so sad that more people weren't listening to me. I have good stuff to say. Just not all of the time. I make most of it up as I go, and that takes some work. So this post is for those of us with less than 200 followers. Believe me, you won't learn anything from reading it; it's more like a support group.

So, you're not being followed. Not even by your friends. Why is that? The best reason that I have been able to test out is that you are too silent. When my updates go up over the course of a week, it is because I am paying attention, writing more, and engaging. So, tip A is to talk. Add content.

Tip B regards active participation. When reading a tweet that relates to you or your life, from a tweeter with which you have a mutual "followship," it is okay under twitterquette to tweet back to them! You may end up in a conversation, or worse.

The third tip, C, is don't use Twitter to tell everyone how great you and your business have become. That is called bragging. It is also called anti-advertising. When you're talking too much and not listening enough, people stop listening to you because they've moved on. Subtract one follower. Do not pass go.

And finally, D, as in "Do Not." Do Not strictly follow stars. Do not follow TV shows. Don't follow politicians exclusively. Follow people that are likely to respond to you. I have tried for months to get Lindsay Lohan to follow me, and it's just not going to be. Trust me.
