|Chicken Industry Player Calls Out Marketing Gimmicks
Last week Jenna Gallegos wrote an excellent piece in the Washington Post titled “10 mega myths about farming to remember on your next grocery run.”
At least two of these myths have been actively promoted through misleading label claims that consumers see when they are shopping for products like chicken.
In Gallego’s list, Myth 7 was “only meat with a hormone-free label is hormone free.” She accurately points out that no meat is hormone-free because animals make their own hormones, but that added hormones haven’t been allowed for chicken or pork for a very long time. Myth 8 was “only meat labeled antibiotic-free is antibiotic free,” and again Gallegos points out that no meat products can be sold until any antibiotics used to treat the animals have cleared their system.
