About eight year ago, Rochester, N.Y. artisan Jeannie Clinton watched a television program on the Travel Channel about where in the U.S. people could mine for gems. One of the sites mentioned was only a couple of hours away from her, so for Mother's Day that year Clinton and her family headed to Herkimer, N.Y. to try their hand at gem hunting.
"We had no idea what we were doing," she readily admits. And yet, she found some gems. That year she traveled to Herkimer eight times to mine for crystals, loving every minute of it.
