|Stew Leonard And The Greatest Marketing Story Ever Told
In 2003 my wife Jennifer and I bought our first home. It was an old stone colonial in Norwalk, Connecticut. Norwalk is located one hour outside of New York City. Just down the hill from our home was a Connecticut landmark named after its founder Stew Leonard. Stew Leonard's, or as the locals call it Stew's, is the world's largest dairy store. The store would become my constant source of inspiration for both customer experience and employee engagement. It has been dubbed by the New York Times as the Disneyland of grocery stores. Stew's has also been a mainstay on the Fortune 100 Best Places to Work list.
Here's the backstory on the business. Stew grew up the son of a dairy farmer in Connecticut. In the 1960's he worked for the family business Clover Farms Dairy delivering milk. Two events would alter his life. The first was decline in demand for milk delivery. The second was that the family dairy farm was furrowed as part of the State invoking eminent domain to build a new highway in Norwalk called Route 7. Stew pivoted and opened his first dairy store in Norwalk in 1969.
