Colleges Don't Care About Applicants' Social Media

All those years of tirelessly warning younger generations about the lasting consequences of what they post on social media were a waste. Apparently, you can be a total moron on social media without it affecting your collegiate aspirations.

Kaplan Test Prep conducted a survey recently that appears to dispel the myth that college admissions officers were perusing the social media profiles of applicants in order to weed out unfit students. Nearly 90% of the colleges surveyed paid little to no mind to applicants’ social media accounts.

In fact, admissions officers revealed that looking at someone’s social media profile was just as likely to help the potential applicant as it was to hurt it. (Again, that’s if the colleges even looked at all.)

That could arguably be the result of all that diligent warning we’ve been doing, thus leading to stellar social profiles designed to make their owner more desirable as an incoming student. In which case, all of the warnings were apparently a good idea.

Applying students can take something away from the Kaplan survey: Colleges apparently Google themselves to see what’s being said. If an applicant’s posts come back disparaging the college, then it just might have an impact on the decision.
