The latest Walgreens holiday commercial shows a scruffy dog delivering great Christmas presents to his family. It is a fun and effective commercial that showcases not only the products Walgreens offers, but also their flyer and staff.
Two big elements of winning commercials are kids and pets. Walgreens chose to have a dog star in their latest commercial, and they did a great job without it being corny or annoying. The commercial also has legs, since the dog is being used on their Facebook page to promote cards. The dialogue keeps going as interested customers have inquired of the breed, which happens to be a German Wirehaired Pointer.
Walgreens did a great job with emotional word choices. Joy is a strong, positive word for the holidays. People want to receive and give joy. Unexpected joy is even more powerful and implies some of those magical holiday moments that make for great memories and fond recalling in later years.
For those of us with pets, we treat them like members of the family. This commercial tags along on that by having the dog buy gifts for family members. While we like to think our pets enjoy being part of the family, this dog shows his appreciation by finding small meaningful gifts. His picture on the coffee mug is an extra nice touch.
The commercial was well written and executed. In the midst of other annoying holiday commercials, it also provided unexpected joy to the viewer by being delightful and cute. Way to go!
