|Don't Gross People Out with Your Commercial
By: Cindy Wendland
Edible Arrangements is airing a holiday commercial called “Share Something Sweet.” The scene begins with a man walking down the street carrying an edible arrangement of fruit. He then shares it with those he meets on his way home. It seems a little strange.
For those who are unfamiliar, edible arrangements are fruit pieces on skewers put together in an arrangement. It is supposed to look like a floral arrangement, but made of fruit.
In the commercial, the man walks down the street and hands fruit to people to make their day happier. We have seen people hand out roses to share some happiness, but fruit — such as cantaloupe? We know people who will not eat at buffets because of the germs. We wonder if Edible Arrangements has any idea how some people will be grossed out by a stranger handing out unwrapped food as he walks down the street.
Sometimes, when a product is a spin-off of something else, it works. Sometimes it does not. The idea of edible arrangements as a spin-off of a floral bouquet is an OK idea. Some people think it is a great idea. But it goes a little too far to metaphorically share happiness with fruit.
