|Moccasins Rocking November's Social Media
By: Jessica Cherok
This month, people are showing off their Native American pride with Rock Your Mocs on social media.
November is Native American Heritage Month, and all across social media, people are posting pictures of their moccasins. Rock Your Mocs is an online event that was started several years ago to raise awareness and solidarity for indigenous people around the world.
While the official date for moccasin rocking is November 15, many celebrate throughout the month. Moccasins often have specific and symbolic meanings within their cultures, and are worn during tribal ceremonies and at other important occasions.
The event was founded by Jessica Atsye, a Laguna Pueblo, who created a Facebook page to encourage other Native American people to celebrate their cultures. In an interview with Colorlines, Atsye said of the spirit of the event, "This gives me hope for the next generation, and to keep going for them. We know that we can't forget our identity, our culture, our roots. [You] can have a lot of money, and big, luxurious stuff, but you can't buy where you're from, and you can't buy a tradition."
Atyse hopes the event will continue to grow and provide an opportunity for Native American pride, as well as a learning experience for non-indigenous people.
