|Chicken Tweets for Its Freedom @ChickenTreat
By: Jessica Cherok
If you've ever wanted to feel badly about the number of Twitter followers you have, then look no further than Betty.
Betty is a chicken. An actual, live chicken. That tweets.
Betty (@ChickenTreat) is the Twitter professional for an Australian fast-food chain, Chicken Treat. Betty tweets for the company under the hashtag #chickentweet, and has just over 37,000 followers. She's been tweeting since the beginning of October, and will continue until she pecks out a five letter English word.
So far she's only managed "YOLO" and "bum." Apparently, chickens have the social media savvy of a complete tool. Not that anyone is expecting anything too prophetic from a chicken.
Of course, Betty's tweets are nonsense, but they've taken off like she's Confucius or something. It's especially helpful when the tweets are photoshopped on top of zen-like beach scenes.
Still, a captive chicken ineptly tweeting for its freedom from a fast-food chicken joint maybe shouldn't be the social media campaign we all flock to, but the Internet does love a good underdog (er, underchicken?) story. Betty finally earning her freedom, against all odds, would bring a lot of warm fuzzies. Unless, of course, Chicken Treat then decides to make nuggets out of her.
