|Facebook's Semi-Annual Privacy Hoax
By: Jessica Cherok
It's that time of year again; the time when uninformed Facebook users seek to protect their photos by posting about copyrights in their Facebook feed.
The near semi-annual freak out is a hoax, and has been going on for years.
Posting to Facebook does not transfer any copyright. The social media site's policy is that by uploading content, you're granting them the right to use and display it, meaning they can show the content according to your privacy settings. The settings you set according to your specific privacy desires. That's it.
Yet the hoax persists. It's probably not surprising that the hoax has popped up again, considering there has been media coverage of YouTube and Facebook's tiff over video content. YouTube vloggers (who actually have copyright claims) are finding their content rights subverted by their content being reposted on Facebook. Though it's worth nothing that their content is not being stolen by Facebook, but by Facebook's users (likely the very same ones who are posting about their supposed rights being infringed upon).
However, if you find yourself still very concerned about what Facebook is doing with your content, perhaps it's time to think about cancelling your account. After all, it's the only surefire way to keep them from doing anything with your content.
