|Not Quite a Dislike Button
By: Jessica Cherok
It may have seemed really obvious to all of us that Facebook needs a dislike button, but the social media giant has been slow to recognize our wisdom. That is, until now, and not exactly in the way we were thinking.
This week, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced as part of a Q&A session that the dislike button would be coming soon to the site. "I think people have asked about the dislike button for many years. Today is a special day because today is the day I can say we're working on it and shipping it."
Not everyone is happy about soon having the option to dislike. Many feel it will be a tool for spreading hate and bullying others. Still, most people seem to like the idea that a dislike button can be used to show support, but in a more appropriate way than liking a sad or tragic post.
So are we really getting a dislike button?
Not exactly. According to Zuckerberg, Facebook wanted to stay away from becoming a voting site like Reddit, and is careful to steer clear of anything that would be used as a voting system. However, Facebook does understand the need for a mechanism to allow people to better express their feelings about posts on the site. "What they really want is the ability to express empathy. Not every moment is a good moment," Zuckerberg said.
In other words, it probably won't be the thumbs down button like we assumed.
