Surprise! Engineers Can be Smart and Attractive

Once again, the Internet seems surprised that attractive people have jobs. Instead of lounging around poolside or walking a runway, some attractive people are actually working in very demanding and technical fields.

This week, Isis Wenger, an platform engineer for One Login, had a photo of her go viral. In the photo, Wenger is commenting on reasons why she loves her job, but that seems to be the last thing anyone is talking about.

Many have commented that Wenger is too sexy to be an engineer. That, of course, is ridiculous, since being an engineer hardly requires a level of sexiness to be met or avoided.

Rightfully, Wenger was offended and began an online campaign with the hashtag #ilooklikeanengineer. Similar to the #distractinglysexy female scientist campaign, women are sharing photos of themselves to dispel the idea that engineers can't be attractive.

Of the reaction to her photo, Wenger says, "This industry’s culture fosters an unconscious lack of sensitivity towards those who do not fit a certain mold. The negative opinions about this ad that strangers feel so compelled to share illustrate solid examples of the sexism that plagues tech."

"My stories have become such a source of inspiration for so many people. I am now developing a team to build out www.ilooklikeanengineer.com, a safe platform for us all to continue to share our stories and experiences relating to diversity issues in tech."
