When is the right time to put Christmas decorations out for sale? People tend to argue about it in October and think stores should wait until after Thanksgiving. That just doesn’t give retailers enough time to bring in the holiday sales. Wait...Selfridges department store in London just started selling Christmas in August!

Christmas décor for sale in August does seem a bit early. According to their buyer, they want tourists to be able to pick up their favorite Christmas decorations when they are visiting. Ah, the tourist trade. So the buyers are catering to visitors from all over the world and trying to deliver what their customers are seeking. That seems like good marketing.

We enjoy visiting Christmas shops while on vacation. During the holiday season, when we put out the decorations or put the ornament on the tree, it reminds us of our vacation and we reminisce. For this reason, Selfridges may be on to something. People enjoy buying souvenirs or trinkets that are useful and remind them of a happy time. Oftentimes we return from vacation and our souvenir goes on a shelf seldom to be looked at. With Christmas items, we pull them out every year and look at them with fresh eyes. That really is the point of souvenirs — to remind us of happy times.

So if Selfridges wants to sell Christmas items in August to travelers, we and the happy tourists who shop there applaud them.
