Facebook Place Tips Bring Deals to News Feeds

Facebook is currently testing its Place Tips beacon, a device that automatically sends out information to users who are nearby. The beacon senses the users’ smartphone, and sends information related to the business.

This technology presents a great opportunity for businesses to promote their brands while the consumer is actually nearby. Information related to sales, merchandise, etc. begins to populate the user’s News Feed.

According to Facebook’s post about the feature:
From friends’ recommendations to information about the places and things that interest you, Facebook helps you connect with the world around you. To better show you this content at just the right place and time, today we’re launching a new feature called place tips. Place tips will show you fun, useful and relevant info about the place you’re at. Tapping on place tips won’t post on Facebook or show anyone where you are.
Facebook also notes that the feature can be turned off, and is not automatically turned on. Users need to give Facebook permission to have the updates sent.

Currently, Place Tips is being tested by a few companies in New York, but Facebook has confirmed that it will be rolled out nationwide in the coming months.
