As President Barack Obama’s presidential term is coming to an end, the leader of the free world has finally started a Twitter account. The White House confirmed that the President of The United States is tweeting under the handle @POTUS.

His first tweet was “Hello, Twitter! It’s Barack. Really! Six years in, they’re finally giving me my own account.”

Despite being brand new to Twitter, the president’s account was wildly popular. In less than a half hour, he had over 100,000 followers. According to the White House, all the tweets coming from the @POTUS account are the president himself.

Obama isn’t entirely new to Twitter. In 2007, @BarackObama was created. This account, however, is not run solely by the president. Staff from Organizing for Action also craft tweets for it.

According to the official White House blog, "President Obama is committed to making his Administration the most open and participatory in history, and @POTUS will give Americans a new venue to engage on the issues that matter most to them."

Shortly after the account’s creation, former president Bill Clinton tweeted “Welcome to @Twitter, @POTUS! One question: Does that username stay with the office? #asking forafriend.”

Obama was quick to quip back. “Good question, @billclinton. The handle comes with the house. Know anyone interested in @FLOTUS?”
