Tasteless Selfies at Blast Site

Perhaps as faux pas as snapping the selfie itself, the selfie stick has become a hated accessory. But several young women took narcissism to a whole new level when they snapped a picture of themselves posing in front of last week’s explosion in New York’s East Village.

The blast, which injured 22 people and killed two, was a horrific event for East Village residents. To add anger to heartache, many people showed up to the site to snap selfies as emergency crews tried to save lives. One such group went so far as to pose and snap a smiling photo with the help of their selfie stick.

The backlash has been immense.

Many people on Twitter and Facebook have lambasted the women for being so tacky in the face of such tragedy. The New York Post featured a photo of the group and their selfie stick with the headline “Village Idiots.”

At first, there had been no public response from the young women. One, Christina Freundlich, apparently changed her Twitter account to private following the outcry on social media. Freundlich later commented in the Des Moines Register that “it was inconsiderate to those hurt in the crash and to the city of New York. What happened last week in the East Village is not to be taken lightly and I regret my course of action.”
