Video Ads Coming to Snapchat

The social photo-sharing application is teaming up with some big companies to bring ads to the app. Big brands like CNN, National Geographic, and the Food Network will all feature ads on the site.

Snapchat has more than 100 million users worldwide, most of whom are teens and young adults. These demographics make it particularly appealing to advertisers.

While Snapchat is referring to the ads as “video content,” they are still definitely ads. Warner Music Group is also getting in on the action and is using DJ Chris Miles to intro music content. Miles is a rapper whose rise to fame started with a viral audition tape for America’s Got Talent.

It’s still too early to tell whether the ads will hurt Snapchat’s loyal user base. There are several up-and-coming competitors out there seeking to unseat Snapchat.

One such competitor, Dstrux, would allow users to delete similar to Snapchat, but with better privacy controls. The images have to be viewed within Dstrux and cannot be downloaded or forwarded. Dstrux’s founder, Nathan Hecht, calls his app “Snapchat for adults.”

The competition is fierce, not only to gain the most users, but to be able to market to them directly. The trick of Snapchat is to not turn off its base with the new ads.
